US imposes 10% tariff on European nations from Feb 1, threatens 25% hike; check full list of countries

As part of his bid to buy Greenland, US President Donald Trump imposed a 10% tariff on goods coming from eight European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland.

Amid opposition to the U.S. purchase of Greenland, President Donald Trump imposed a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. Trump warned that tariffs would be increased to 25 percent until Danish territory is secured.

Trump will impose tariffs on European countries

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the move was necessary for national security, citing China and Russia’s interest in the region. He offers to negotiate but warns of increasing tariffs: 10% from 1 February 2026 and 25% from 1 June 2026.

He threatened to impose 10% tariffs on several European countries; if they oppose the purchase, this rate will increase to 25%, and he stated that after years of US support, “it is time for Denmark to give back”. “Starting in 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25%. This Tariff is valid and payable until an Agreement is reached for the Whole and Complete acquisition of Greenland,” Trump said.

Trump-Greenland purchase plan

This big move by Trump came after Washington’s warnings to impose customs duties on countries that oppose plans to purchase Greenland for “national security” reasons. “I can impose tariffs on countries that do not comply with Greenland because we need Greenland for national security,” he said. Trump claimed that Greenland was important to protect the United States from Russia and China’s presence in the Arctic Ocean and demanded that the Kingdom of Denmark sell the self-governing region. However, Denmark and other NATO allies refuse to cede the region to the United States; France, Germany and other European countries are sending troops to Greenland to help improve security.

Denmark on Wednesday announced plans to increase its military presence in Greenland after Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met with White House representatives in Washington, D.C., to discuss Trump’s intention to seize the semi-autonomous Danish territory to exploit its mineral resources amid growing interest from Russia and China. However, according to Al Jazeera, the meeting failed to change the stances of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.
