Puri Jagannadh Comments on Charvaka Philosophy and God, Sparks Debate

Director Puri Jagannadh has once again grabbed attention after his latest “Thoughts” audio clip went viral on social media platforms. In his speech, the filmmaker openly discussed God, atheism, Hindu philosophy and the importance of respecting different faiths, triggering widespread debate online.
“A lot of people get angry if someone says there is no God. But what many people don’t know is that Hinduism sees both faith and atheism as equal,” Puri Jagannadh said. He explained that Hindu philosophy has historically encouraged different schools of thought and provided space for inquiry and debate.
Referring to ancient Indian philosophy, he said, “There were schools called Charvaka schools where children were taught that there was no God. They did not believe in the soul, karma, rebirth or heaven.” According to him, Charvaka philosophy focused on direct experience, logical thought and physical reality. He also stated that followers of the school reject rituals, temples and religious ceremonies.
The director also emphasized that debates and different perspectives are never completely rejected in Hindu traditions. “Even though many Hindu philosophers opposed the Charvaka philosophy, they still retained these discussions and arguments,” he said. He also noted that ancient texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads contain deep discussions and questions surrounding life, truth, and God.
Puri Jagannadh also emphasized that human values are more important than labels and beliefs. “What is important is compassion, honesty, peace, kindness and self-control rather than whether the person believes in God or not,” he said.
According to the filmmaker, a person can adhere to Hindu culture even if he does not believe in God. He strongly encouraged people not to view atheists as anti-Hindu. “There is no need to call them anti-Hindu or insult them. If necessary, debate with them peacefully, understand their arguments and learn from each other,” he said.
