Children of immigrants who turn 18 will have to obtain their own employment patents or face deportation within 30 days. The move follows a surge in anti-immigrant sentiment triggered by the March 22, 2024 terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall in Moscow, which killed more than 140 people and was claimed by an ISIS-linked group. Authorities’ rapid detention of Tajik suspects led to widespread raids on immigrant hostels, mass deportations, ethnic profiling, and harassment targeting Central Asians, especially Tajiks and Uzbeks.
