Check your modem: millions to get free broadband boost

More than 2.7 million households and business will unlock a free wide band speed increase in the coming days.
However, all houses will not be entitled to receive faster downloads and more may miss their full benefits due to old equipment.
Starting from the market, NBN CO will launch the Internet upgrade program for network-connected houses using Fiber-The PremSIS and Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) technology.
The free upgrade program will increase download and loading speeds for customers in three wide band plan that affect approximately 2,77 million users.
Customers in 100 Megabit per second will see the download speeds upgraded to 500MBPS, while 250MBPS plans will rise to download 750MBPS, while loading speeds will double the fastest plans to 100MBPS.
To increase Australia’s internet use, NBN CO will launch two Gigabit downloads per second as part of the program.
“We are very proud to offer Australians a reliable, high -speed and high capacity network, and as we said, it is our investment that allows us to speed up greatly,” he said.
However, most of the Australian households are connected to 50MBPS large band plans and will have to upgrade to get additional speed.
Andy O’Connor, General Manager of Vodafone Fixed Line Products, said that speed increases will be automatically delivered to appropriate customers and there will be a significant change for large band users.
“I call it a paradigm shift, Aap Aap said.
He continued: “The biggest change in the market we have seen so far.”
More than half of the company’s internet users may get speed increases, but some of them may vary shortly if they cannot control the connection options or control their hardware.
NBN users, who could not reach higher speeds, should ask if they are suitable for a free fiber to-sunum, Mr. O’Connor said that those who expect a speed increase should check that their modems can deliver it.
“Everyone’s home modem can go to this speed right now,” he said.
“Some old models can go to only 200 or maybe 250 megabit per second.”
Speed updates start on Sunday and take a few days for the upgrades to enter into force.
According to the Speedtest Global Index, Australia is currently 63rd in the world for fixed wide band speeds with an average 92MBPS download.
