Rahul Dravid among contenders for England Test coach’s job after McCullum sacking: report
According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Dravid is on a list of potential candidates that also includes former England coach Andy Flower and former England spinner Richard Dawson.
McCullum’s four-year tenure as Test coach ended after England lost 1-2 at home to New Zealand and the England and Wales Cricket Board decided “it was the right time to make a change” ahead of next year’s Ashes.
He will continue to be in charge of the ODI and T20I sides.
Dravid, 53, who led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and the 2023 World Test Championship final, is seen as an attractive candidate due to his “meticulous” approach and deep understanding of the game.
However, the newspaper pointed out that Dravid has “no desire” to coach full-time.
“Dravid has no desire to coach full-time, but the England Test job will give him the chance to spend extended periods at home and keep his favorite playing format alive. England should at least gauge his interest,” the report said. Leading candidates include Zimbabwe great Andy Flower, England’s most successful coach in the modern era, having guided the team to three Ashes series victories and the No 1 Test ranking.
Flower has also enjoyed significant success in franchise cricket, including consecutive IPL titles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Dawson, currently Glamorgan’s head coach, is also being viewed as a serious option after impressing with his tactical nous and coaching credentials at both regional and international level.
Others named in the report include Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara, England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson and former Australia coach Justin Langer.
