This comes after Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources, that the US Department of Justice was close to dropping criminal fraud charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, who has pledged to invest $10 billion in the US economy.
Bloomberg reported that Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar agreed to pay a total of $18 million to resolve U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) allegations that they made false and misleading statements about Adani Green Energy.
According to the offer filed in federal court on Thursday, Gautam Adani will pay $6 million, while Sagar will pay $12 million to resolve the lawsuit filed by the SEC in November 2024. The deal still requires a judge’s approval.

The SEC had previously alleged that Gautam Adani led efforts to pay or promise hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes to Indian officials to secure contracts that Adani Green needed for India’s largest solar project. The regulator also alleged that he and his nephew falsely encouraged the company’s compliance with anti-bribery laws and raised $750 million through a bond offering.

India and the US have been in talks for months for a trade deal, and the countries announced the framework for a bilateral trade agreement in February. The text was published on February 7.

However, the US Supreme Council ruled against Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on February 20, after which India reportedly tried to redesign the agreement.
