Record turnouts in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu polls a display of citizen power: Supreme Court

The record high 92.03% voter turnout and minimal violence rate in the West Bengal Assembly elections are proof that citizens know their power lies in the democratic act of voting, the Supreme Court said on Friday, April 24, 2026.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who headed the three-judge panel, said, “As an individual, as a citizen of India, I was very happy to see the voting percentage. In this country, people need to participate… People are realizing their power in democracy, the power of voting. They know that their power lies in the democratic act of voting. They will not bow to violence.”
