Reform MP apologises after saying ‘adverts full of black people, full of Asian people’ | Politics | News

A Reform England MP apologized, saying: “Seeing ads full of black people, full of Asian people drives me crazy.” Sarah Pochin said her comments were “poorly expressed” but argued that many ads were “not representative of British society”. The MP for Runcorn and Helsby has responded to a TalkTV viewer who complained about today’s adverts.
He said: “It doesn’t reflect our society and I feel like the average white person, the average white family, is no longer represented.” Ms Pochin, Reform’s first MP to win a by-election, blamed “woke libertarians” in the “artsy fart world”. He added: “The interior of the M25 may be good, but it’s certainly not representative of the rest of the country.”
Ms Pochin apologized on social media for her comments but still insisted the TV adverts were “driving DEI crazy”.
He wrote of
“The point I wanted to make was that many British TV ads have driven DEI crazy and are no longer representative of British society as a whole.
“This is not an attack on any group, but an observation of balance and fairness in how our country is portrayed on the big screen.
“Research commissioned by Channel 4 as part of its Mirror On The Industry project found that more than half of adverts will feature black people in 2022, up sharply from 37 per cent in 2020 following the Black Lives Matter movement.
“By contrast, black people make up around 4 per cent of the population in England and Wales, according to the 2021 Census.
“Representation in advertising must reflect the diversity of modern Britain but must also be proportionate and inclusive. My comments were made in that context and I stand by the principle that equality should mean fairness for all.”
