Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick resigns, third House member to quit this month

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has resigned from the House, effective Tuesday, when the House Ethics Committee prepares to consider punishment for the Florida Democrat for violating more than two dozen House rules and ethics standards.
Cherfilus-McCormick is the third House member to resign since April 13.
He was indicted in US District Court in Miami in November on charges accusing him of stealing $5 million in Covid-19 disaster funds, some of which he allegedly contributed to the 2021 congressional campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick announced his resignation in a statement published on social media site X.
On April 13, Rep. Eric Swalwell of California and Republican Rep. Tony Gonzalez of Texas said they would resign.
