Rep. Massie says he would support short-term Iran deal amid rising costs

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky. He said Sunday he would support a short-term deal with Iran after President Donald Trump said a deal with Tehran was “largely negotiated,” arguing that Americans are already feeling the economic pain from the conflict.
“Heck yeah, I would support it!” Massie said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when asked if he would support a short-term Iran deal: “We don’t know what the terms are, but if Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz were leaving last night, I’d say it’s probably a pretty good deal.”
Massie, a long-time critic of U.S. military intervention overseas, attributed his support for the agreement to rising fuel and agriculture costs at home.

“My constituents are suffering,” Massie said. “Gasoline is almost $5 a gallon. Diesel is almost $6 a gallon, and farmers in Kentucky can’t afford the fertilizer they put on their fields.”
The Kentucky Republican also defended his record after losing the Republican primary this week after seven terms in Congress, arguing that his independence in Washington hurt him politically.
“Since the day I came to Washington, D.C., I’ve been doing this job because I think that’s what people want you to do,” Massie said. “I read the bills. I didn’t give my voting card to the speaker. I never gave it to a president. I don’t even give my voting card to the Freedom Caucus. I vote for people, not parties.”
Massie argued that his willingness to work with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna on legislation related to the Epstein files made him a target.

“I think the biggest crime I committed against the swamp, Kristen, was to show the American people that someone on the right could join someone on the left and do something,” Massie said. “That’s when they decided I needed to be let out.”
Massie also claimed that outside spending was overshadowing his campaign.
“They couldn’t buy my vote for 14 years, so they bought this seat,” Massie said. “This was the most expensive race in congressional primary history.”
The congressman warned that Republicans could face political problems ahead of the midterm elections, arguing that the party has alienated many factions in Trump’s coalition.
“There are a growing number of people on the right who have a type of TDS called Trump disappointment syndrome,” Massie said.

“They alienated MAHA by bowing to pesticide manufacturers and pharmaceutical manufacturers. They alienated fiscal hawks by running DOGE out of town. They alienated people who didn’t want to get into another war,” Massie said.
Massie also criticized GOP leadership for spending fights in Congress, including opposition to funding for Trump-backed projects.
“The ballroom, I mean it’s such a terrible waste of money,” Massie said, referring to the proposed White House ballroom project. “This is a slap in the face to Americans.”

Massie argued that economic concerns should take precedence over what he described as excessive federal spending and foreign commitments.
“We operate like a Roman Empire,” Massie said. “We’ve expanded overseas thanks to our foreign aid and foreign bases. We’re spending money we don’t have, and gas, rent and groceries are so expensive that people can’t afford them.”

Trump said on Truth Social on Saturday that a deal with Iran was “substantially negotiated,” but official deal details had not been released as of Sunday morning.
Fox News Digital reached out to Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Lindsey Graham for comment but did not immediately hear back.
