Rescue crews suspend search for man who fell from Carnival Splendor cruise ship off the coast of Qld

Authorities have suspended the search for a man who fell off a cruise ship off the coast of Queensland after the search entered its third day.
The man, aged in his 70s, reportedly fell overboard in waters northeast of Cape Morton while traveling on a Carnival Splendor cruise ship around 10.30pm last Friday. A multi-agency search operation – involving water police, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), Queensland Government Air Force, Surf Life Saving Queensland Helicopters, Sea Rescue Bribe and Gold Coast, Redcliffe Coastguard, cruise line and a number of commercial vessels, commercial aviation and marine vessels – began and lasted three days.
Queensland Police confirmed in a statement on Tuesday evening that the search had been suspended.
“The Queensland Police Service acknowledges the contribution of other agencies and volunteers to the search,” a spokesman said.
“Officers continue to be in contact with the man’s family who have been made aware of this update.

“The suspension of the search is contingent upon the receipt of additional information or intelligence regarding the man’s disappearance.”
NewsWire has contacted Carnival Splendor for comment.
In an earlier statement, a spokesman said: “All relevant authorities have been alerted and Carnival will assist authorities with their investigations upon the ship’s return to Sydney.”
“The Carnival Care Team supports the guest’s family; our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones.”
