Residents warned ‘stay indoors’ after suspected cyanide leak | US | News

California residents have been told to “shelter in place” as many agencies work to mitigate a possible cyanide leak. The “shelter in place” warning has been removed.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department said it will assist the Sonoma County Fire District in a hazmat incident that occurred south of the city of Santa Rosa on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

KRON4 News reported Sonoma County officials said 45 county personnel were on the scene, as well as a hazmat team.

Officials said the agencies have received numerous reports of odors.

Cyanide is often described as having a bitter almond odor. The smell is also often described as similar to a swimming pool locker room.

The source of the odor is believed to be a commercial area near the recycling facility.

Citizens were asked to stay in their homes and keep their doors and windows closed.

The City of Santa Rosa Fire Department said in a post on Facebook that there is currently no threat to the city.

No illness or injury was reported, but emergency medical teams are at the scene as a precaution.

“The Santa Rosa Fire Department is assisting the Sonoma County Fire District with a Hazardous Materials Incident south of the City of Santa Rosa in the 3000 block of Santa Rosa Boulevard,” a fire department spokesman said.
