Restaurant Owner Killed in Makeshift Goods Lift Accident in UP

A restaurant owner died after being crushed under a makeshift goods elevator at his restaurant in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Tuesday. Police said he stuck his neck in the elevator shaft at ‘Khatirdari’ restaurant on Court Road late on Monday night after the items he wanted did not arrive on time from the upper floor.

Sert Khurana (58) was allegedly hit on the head by the elevator and was seriously injured. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Sadar Bazar Station House Officer Chandrasen Saini said that he is a resident of Tilak Nagar Colony and owns the restaurant. The officer said the elevator was not a traditional elevator but a makeshift elevator used only for transporting goods.

According to police, Khurana had asked the workers upstairs to send some supplies around 1.30am. When the goods did not arrive for a long time, he went to the elevator to check the reason for the delay.

“The elevator suddenly came down and hit Khurana’s head and neck, seriously injuring him,” Saini said.

The officer said the incident sparked panic among the staff, who rushed Khurana to the hospital and doctors declared him dead.

Police reported that the body was sent to Ankara for autopsy.

Police are investigating whether the accident was caused by technical malfunction or negligence.
