Roses are a magnet for greenflies because their honeydew offers pests an irresistible sugary feast.
But the RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal-winning grower has revealed his team’s way of dealing with aphid outbreaks is surprisingly simple – and it won’t cost gardeners a penny.
Tina Limmer, Peter Beales’ Roses He said the award-winning nursery in Norfolk relied on nothing but water to combat greenfly.
The historic nursery, founded in 1968, unveiled its new Kate Moss rose at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, winning an impressive 31st gold medal.
Speaking to the Express alongside the stunning display of more than 1,000 roses in the Grand Pavilion, Tina said gardeners should avoid reaching for harsh chemicals.
“If your roses get greenflies, rinse them with water,” he said.
“You take a hose and spray it on them, then wait for the ladybugs to move in. This way you don’t spray bad chemicals and the bees are protected.
“Rinse them or crush them if you’re brave enough.”
The exhibition featured more than 1,000 stunning roses grown in Norfolk by the team of breeders Michael Baldwin and Peter Beales, but Tina has a favourite.
“A climber that can bloom from now until Christmas if you’re lucky. Also known as Sweet Rose or Maltese Rose. Very sweet.”
