Team jerseys arrived and Tony Popovic made some big decisions here.

First up: Captain Maty Ryan on the bench! Patrick Beach will start in his place as goalkeeper. This will be Beach’s third match and first competitive fixture for the Socceroos.

Who saw this coming? Ryan has been in good form for Levanta in La Liga and Beach has been in good form for Melbourne City, but you could argue he hasn’t even been the best goalkeeper in the A-League this season; Although Australia’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland was strong and clearly Popovic liked what he saw.

This is a move Popovic has made before. He did so in his first game of duty in 2024, making what was interpreted as an early statement to the squad as he replaced Ryan with Joe Gauci: no one’s place was safe. But this is the World Cup!

And that’s not all. There is no room for vice-captain Jackson Irvine in midfield either; Paul Okon Jr. He will start alongside Aiden O’Neill instead.

So the captain and vice-captain are on the bench.

Meanwhile, Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe will start as inverted wingers, Mohamed Toure is fit and will play as a striker, and Cameron Burgess has been preferred over Barcelona’s defensive target Lucas Herrington.

Harry Souttar is the only player in this starting 11 with World Cup experience. Wow.

In Türkiye, as expected, Kenan Yıldız was chosen as the substitute player.
