Ricky Hatton’s struggle with depression
Hatton’s death sparked tributes from around the world. His close friend and renowned boxing expert Steve Bunce was among the first to respond, speaking about the tragic news on BBC Radio 5 Live. Bunce, one of boxing’s most respected voices, spoke out shortly after the announcement went out, with host Steve Crossman checking in to make sure he was ready to continue broadcasting.
Steve Bunce has revealed he did not turn up for a boxing match the night before Ricky Hatton’s death was confirmed. Hatton had opened up about his struggles with depression and addiction.

“It’s incredibly shocking news because he was in a really good place. He’s been through some struggles, Rick. So, he’s talked about his mental health issues, he’s talked about his addictions; he’s confronted them, he’s confronted them, he’s attacked them and he’s dealt with them,” Bunce said, according to The Mirror.
“He was getting ready for an exhibition fight; as it is for many fighters, the gym was his salvation. He was getting his body and his mind in a better place. Apparently, as we were talking to people, he hadn’t shown up at the gym on Friday, and he was supposed to be in a fight last night and he didn’t show up, and someone went to his house this morning… This is shocking news.”
How did Ricky Hatton die?
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has remained consistent about the circumstances surrounding his untimely death and insisted there was no foul play. Hatton’s body was discovered early that morning by his longtime manager and friend Paul Speak. GMP were called at 6.45am and arrived at the scene a short time later. In an official statement released shortly after the incident, GMP said: “Officers were called by a member of the public to Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6.45am today where they discovered the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances at this time.”
Hatton’s family insisted the boxer appeared to be in a “good place” in the weeks leading up to his death. A statement released on September 17 said: “As far as we know, despite his well-documented struggles, Richard was in a good place.
“He was excited for the future, with his bag ready to head to Dubai to promote a comeback challenge and planning a celebration in Dubai with his beloved daughters Millie and Fearne at the centre.”
The family revealed that Hatton had dinner with his daughters the previous Friday and was in regular contact with loved ones and his team. He was preparing to take part in Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium; Here, a minute’s applause, black armbands and a memorial picture honored him in his absence.
