Roger Clemens questions MLB’s warning to Giants pitchers who wrote Bible verses on Pride Night hats

Major League Baseball drew a line with players writing Bible verses on their Pride hats.

At the San Francisco Giants Pride Night game, pitchers Landon Roupp, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker wrote Bible verses on team-issued hats.

The players referenced Genesis 9:12-16, a passage about the rainbow covenant.

MLB issued a warning to players, stating that the signs violated the league’s uniform policies.

Former player Roger Clemens addressed the situation during an appearance on “The Will Cain Show,” questioning the league’s implementation of uniform rules.

Clemens noted that the players changed gears without receiving discipline from the league.

“We always change our uniforms based on numbers or people who have passed away,” Clemens told Cain.

“I know one time in Boston, when Larry Bird was retiring, I wore his hat. They put 33 silver pens in the hat to honor Larry Bird. I did that for my mother and grandmother.”

Clemens argued that players should be allowed to display symbols of faith on the field.

“I love seeing these guys show the blessings God has given them to be on the field,” Clemens said. “That was the case for me.”

To solve the problem, Clemens suggested that MLB apply the same rules it uses for shoe customizations.

“They make custom cleats that you can paint, they make your cleats the way you want them,” Clemens said. “Maybe they’ll do something like that, and men can wear a hat with Bible verses on it. They feel strongly about it.”

MLB’s warning sparked a backlash beyond the diamond.

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley sent a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, demanding justification for the warnings and questioning the league’s stance on religious expression.
