Qantas flight to Dallas forced back to Sydney by mid-air medical emergency

A Qantas flight from Sydney to Texas was forced to turn back halfway through its journey due to a medical emergency.
Four hours after Qantas flight QF7 departed from the Australian coast towards Dallas, it had to change direction over the waters of the Northern Fiji Basin and return to Sydney Airport.
Australian Olympic diver Sam Fricker, 23, was on board and documented the strangely tortuous journey on Instagram.

Fricker also noted that the plane dumped fuel into the air. According to 7 News, the plane was carrying too much fuel to land in Fiji.
“We are dumping fuel right now,” Fricker said.
“We flew out of Sydney four hours ago, had to turn back completely due to a medical emergency. Now of course it’s sad to see them dumping fuel into the ocean.
“It’s a tough time for fuel, I can’t imagine how expensive it is for them, but it shows the cost of a human life; a human life is priceless so it’s worth it.”

The emergency reversal comes as Australia grapples with rising fuel costs due to conflict in the Middle East.
Flicker posted a separate video with the following title: “POV: you flew over the ocean for 8 hours just for the love of the game?”
The plane then returned to the air to complete its journey to Dallas.
Qantas has been contacted for comment.
