Hero off-duty firefighter praised for quick-thinking actions that saved children in Minehead bus crash

When a somerset travels behind a school coach and a trench of 20FT, he was praised for taking steps to save the lives of children.
Students from Minehead Secondary School, nine and ten years old students, in the afternoon of Thursday in the A936 near the Wheeddon Cross, the 70 -person coach returned from the Exmoor Zoo.
A child died at the scene and 21 people were injured. Two children were hospitalized with serious injuries.
At a press conference yesterday evening, an out -of -duty firefighter traveling behind the coach was able to immediately release passengers.
Gavin Ellis praised the Firefighter from Devon and Somperset Fire & Rescue Service and said: ım I am also grateful to the non -duty firefighter traveling behind the coach who can start to release these wounded from the bus. ”

The authority added: “The roof was mobilized for a big incident of a coach who overturned the roof and shifted about 20FT.”
“Our crews have made a series of extract and rescue in extremely difficult conditions, and at the same time supported our ambulance colleagues with the injured treatment,” he added.
“This was a very complex and technically difficult event for our crews to cope, and I am grateful for the efforts and actions of crews to do everything they do as safely as possible.”
The person who does not want to take the name said: “The coach went down the slope. This is a very upright and big coach.
“There is no obstacle there.
“We’re used to it, you don’t even notice it.
“To be honest, I can’t believe it is the biggest thing I know that the slope is over.
“I am very sorry for all the children in that ram.”
Speaking outside the Bridgwater Police Station, Mark Edgington said: “Some people were presented to the hospital or taken to hospital.
“This includes two children who were hospitalized by air ambulance, many passengers either continued a slight injury or physically damaged and was transferred to a rest center.
“Studies are taking place during the evening to help them return to Minehead. An investigation will be conducted due to this incident.”
