The royal couple announced they will be embarking on a major royal tour in a few days. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will fly together to Portugal in June to carry out a series of missions.
The couple, who are both royal family employees, will be in Portugal from June 1 to June 3. This means they’ll be back in time for Peter Phillips’ wedding on June 6. Edward and Sophie’s royal tour of Portugal aims to celebrate the historic ties and modern relationship between the UK and Portugal.
The royal family will visit many places, including Lisbon and Porto.
The couple will also undertake a number of initiatives that are important to them and about which they are passionate.
This includes youth opportunity, participation in sport and Women, Peace and Security.
Buckingham Palace said that on the tour, Sophie and Edward will also visit historic sites reflecting their UK-Portuguese heritage and hold meetings with students and community organisations.
The visit was timed to mark the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor, which formed the basis of the world’s oldest diplomatic alliance.
The last royal visit to Portugal was in 2011.
This was when King Charles and Queen Camilla visited for a royal tour before becoming Her Royal Highnesses.
Edward and Sophie had previously taken a royal trip to Portugal together; Their last joint visit to the country was in 2005.
The Duke last visited the country in June 2009.
