Meghan Markle officially joined the Royal Family in 2018, and the future looked bright for her and her new husband, Prince Harry. But the couple have since left royal duties and started their own lives, and it’s been a tumultuous road.
Royal expert Catherine Mayer analyzed the couple’s journey. In her book Divide and Rule: Royal Women and Their Wars , she asks the question: “How and why did this dream collapse?” From the reputation of the monarchy to Prince Harry marrying his future wife and even Meghan taking on a royal role, “everyone seemed set to win,” he says.
But Mayer says there were “forces and factors that derailed it” [Meghan’s] our hopes and ours.”
“Harry and Meghan’s marriage took the groom to an all-time high, briefly above Elizabeth II, while the bride rose to sixth place,” says Mayer.
“He soon learned the difference between manageable fame and the new level of fame: One opens doors, the other imprisons you.
“Besides, for all but the lucky few, what goes up must come down.”
The Sussexes will return to England as a family for the first time in four years in July.
It is one of those rare visits and marks the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.
The last time Harry brought his family home was in 2022 for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The Sussex couple also returned a few months later to attend the late monarch’s funeral.
Prince Harry and Meghan live in Montecito, California and have done so since 2020.
Harry remains a prince and fifth in line to the throne.
Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have retained their titles but are no longer referred to as Their Royal Highnesses.
