During one of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s annual Christmas speeches, the late Queen Elizabeth II They reportedly felt they had been subjected to Elizabeth’s “contempt.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sensationally stepped down from royal duties in January 2020, following a particular moment that was reported to be the “final straw” just a few weeks earlier.
In 2019, Harry and Meghan, along with seven-month-old Prince Archie, spent the festive period in Canada with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, and were allegedly “flying over the edge” during Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas broadcast. Family portraits were clearly visible on the monarch’s table as she addressed the audience, but one was missing as there was no photo of Meghan and Harry with their then-newborn son.
In the Mirror’s book Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claimed the Sussexes believed the Royal Family was “conspiring against them” with the move, with the couple feeling “they have long been ostracized by the institution and not a fundamental part of its future”.
They wrote: “There was no need to look any further than the family photographs on display during the Queen’s Christmas Day Speech. In the Green Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, where the Queen gave her address, viewers [Waleses] and a black-and-white picture of their children, Charles and Camilla, Prince Philip and George VI.
“Conspicuously absent was a photo of Harry, Meghan and their new baby Archie.” The authors explained the Palace’s reasoning behind this snub, as royal sources insisted the photographs were chosen to represent a “direct line of succession”. But Omid and Carolyn said Harry and Meghan thought it was “another sign that they need to think their own way.”
During Christmas 2019,The royal couple missed the Queen’s pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace and did not attend the traditional royal family gathering at the monarch’s private Sandringham estate on Christmas Day.
