Norway’s Queen Sonja broke her silence a few days after her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s surgery. A lung transplant was performed last week on a 52-year-old patient, whose health has recently seriously deteriorated due to the progression of lung fibrosis.
The royal, who has been married to Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon since 2001, now has to use supplemental oxygen and has significantly restricted her official duties. As she left a recent royal engagement in Kristiansand, Norway’s sixth largest city, Queen Sonja made sure to comment on her daughter-in-law’s recent surgery, telling waiting reporters: “It’s just amazing.”
He later added his delight at how well the surgery went, adding: “It’s amazing it went so well.”
Following news of the surgery, it was reported that he was reunited with his son Marius Borg Hoiby, who was convicted of rape, hours after his lung transplant surgery.
Last week, Mette-Marit’s son was found guilty of two counts of rape and sentenced to four years in prison.
Scandinavian magazine Se og Hor claimed last week that Marius had been “constantly visiting his mother” for the past few days despite being in prison.
according to HELLO!, Marius was allegedly “smuggled” into Oslo University Hospital through the back entrance to avoid photographers.
The Crown Princess’ son from a previous relationship, who is not considered a royal figure, has been held in custody since his trial ended on February 1.
He was convicted of raping two women, one at his stepfather’s Skaugum estate, Crown Prince Haakon, in 2018, and the other in Oslo in 2024.
He was also found guilty of harassing his ex-girlfriend, Norwegian influencer Nora Haukland.
