Royals are a disaster this season, but Sunday’s matchup with the Angels is the ideal spot to back them

Today is probably one of those Sundays where you can park yourself in front of the TV, on the couch, have a few beers, and be content. We have the NBA Playoffs, the NHL Playoffs, and tons of baseball games to choose from. Navigating these games can be a difficult thing for sports bettors, but once you find a good game, you lock it in. I think I have one since the Angels will face the Royals in a game on Sunday.

The Angels are playing pretty well to start the year. Before you start locking in postseason tickets, understand that they are still hovering around .500. But this is still a bit more positive and successful than what we’ve seen in recent seasons. This is probably the best start since the 2023 season. Again, this doesn’t mean much because it’s still too early. But we need to look for some silver lining for this franchise.

Tonight, they send Reid Detmers to the mound in hopes of capitalizing on what little momentum they have. Detmers is 1-2 on the season with a 4.08 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. WHIP shows me that he may have some bad luck. A look at his game log shows that he alternates good starts with bad starts. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three earned runs in the season opener. He then pitched 6.2 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits. He pitched 4.1 innings against Atlanta and allowed six runs. The Yankees scored just one run in seven innings. He allowed four earned runs in six innings in his most recent outing. Royals hitters did well against Detmers, hitting .294 in 34 at-bats.

The royal family is a bit of a disaster. They look like the worst team in the league and are in the same league as the White Sox and Twins. Obviously the season is still very young, but for a team with postseason aspirations, this isn’t the start they want to get to. They are in a very bad situation, especially on the road, but luckily they are home now. Before this series, the team was winning 75% of its home games.

The good news for them is that Seth Lugo is at his peak and has had a great performance for the Royals. He is 1-1 on the season with a 1.15 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. Lugo has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his five starts this season. He also made four quality starts in five outings. Angels’ hitters turned in a .182 batting average against him in 44 at-bats.
This is a must-win game for the Royals. It’s hard to support them right now, but this is the ideal situation. If you take Kansas City home, you put the best pitcher on the field. I think playing Lugo to keep the Angels under 2.5 earned runs is a great idea, and I also really like the Royals to win this game.

This is one place where I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win on the run line. Kansas City hasn’t proven to be a team you want to root for up to this point, but I think they have some significant advantages in this game. Officially, I’ll take the Royals -0.5 through five innings, on the game’s moneyline and under earned runs allowed by Lugo.
