Russia delivers fourth squadron of AI-enabled S-400 air defence system

India has received the fourth fleet of the Russian-made S-400 air defense system, strengthening the country’s long-range air defense network. Sources from the defense sector said that the system arrived from Russia as planned in May and is expected to be deployed in the operational area shortly.

The delivery is part of a $5.43 billion deal signed between India and Russia in 2018 to purchase five S-400 regimental systems. Three S-400 squadrons have already entered service; The fourth one arrived after delays linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The remaining fleet under the original contract is expected to be delivered in 2027, officials said. Deliveries are now continuing as planned.

Senior defense officials said the S-400 will be integrated with AI-powered decision support capabilities aimed at improving threat prioritization and target selection.

“AI-assisted targeting will help operators identify and prioritize air threats. All incoming targets will be displayed in the system and artificial intelligence will make suggestions based on the nature of the threat. However, the final decision to participate will belong to the operator,” a senior official said.

The AI-powered system will help distinguish between different categories of threats, including ballistic missiles, fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles, and enable more efficient use of interceptor missiles, officials said.

The S-400 Triumf is among the world’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile systems; It has the capacity to hit aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles from long ranges. The system forms an important pillar of India’s layered air defense architecture on both the western and northern fronts.

Officials also underlined the operational role played by the S-400 during Operation Sindoor, emphasizing that the system made a significant contribution to India’s air defense posture during the conflict. According to sources, the platform was effective against air threats and demonstrated long-range engagement capabilities.

Beyond Russian-origin systems, India is simultaneously pursuing the development of an indigenous integrated air defense ecosystem under the broader ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ initiative.
