Russian drone hits Romanian apartments, wounding two people and starting fire | Romania

A Russian drone, part of an overnight attack on Ukraine, crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people, officials said. Officials condemned Moscow’s “irresponsible escalation” in an official statement.

The Romanian defense ministry said the drone was tracked by radar in Romanian airspace and crashed on the roof of a building in Galati on Friday. A fire broke out after the impact. Two people suffered injuries requiring medical treatment and several people were evacuated.

Police and other institutions responded to the scene. Galati is located on the Danube River, east of the borders of Moldova and Ukraine.

The Romanian military launched two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter authorized to attack targets, and warning messages were sent to affected residents.

More civilians were killed in the Russia-Ukraine war in the first four months of this year than in the same period in the last three years, UN secretary-general António Guterres told the UN security council on Thursday. Guterres called for more diplomacy, immediate de-escalation and a “complete and unconditional ceasefire”, warning of “unknown and unintended consequences” from an escalation and intensification of attacks.

Russia is using long-range ballistic missiles and drones to damage Ukraine’s power grid and hammer cities, and Ukraine is preparing for more heavy bombardment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday he is pressing the United States to provide more Patriot air defense missiles that can counter Russian ballistic missile attacks.
