Ryder Cup 2025: Charlie Kirk killing increases event risk, say police

Trump, who attended a commemoration ceremony for Kirk this week in Arizona, visited various sports events, including the finale of men in Flushing Meadows in New York on September 7 this summer.

Additional security measures caused delays there, hundreds of fans missed the beginning of the match, and the president’s coming to the Ryder Cup affects how the routine of the day.

Major Udice said, “It will definitely create another challenge, but this is something we have included in our plan a year and a half ago.”

He continued: “We are trying to hit this balance between all the audience to minimize the interruption, and to keep the president safe.”

Trump, a golf fan with courses around the world, is expected to come to Bethpage late on Friday morning and watch four balls in the afternoon.

The PGA of the event was reported to be concerned about the first plan for the opening TEE shots immediately after 07:00 EST (12:00 BST).

Ryder Cup Director Bryan Karns told BBC Sport when asked about the difficulty created by the President’s visit, “the most difficult thing we need to do,” he said.

“There are certainly some things that will last a little longer, but I think it doesn’t come to the point where someone will be prevented from sitting in a chair in the first Tee. Obviously there are some logistics difficulties, but there’s nothing we can’t solve.”

When Trump’s arrival is needed to pause the game, Karns, “No, we will not delay the game, this is fully adjusted for how we work. We don’t have the luxury of turning the lights and finishing it at 8 or 21.00.

“Obviously, we’re leading the incredibly collaborative secret service and the White House.

When I was asked whether Kirk’s last murder and the highly divided political landscape in the United States have been added to the safety difficulty, Karns said: “This kind of event is united.

“New York people are really gathering together from the opposite sides of the street, from completely different pasts, and such moments are healing opportunities.

“I think this is the spirit of the Ryder Cup. Fans of all past fans can come and take root for their teams.”
