Ryder Cup: Luke Donald return ‘wonderful’ for Europe – Rory McIlroy

McIlroy, who lives on the same street as Donald, said he had spoken to the former world number one “in many conversations before the new year” about staying for a third term.

Following the announcement, Donald told BBC Sport that he wanted to take some time after the last Ryder Cup to enjoy the victory, which was left on a dramatic backdrop due to the high-tension atmosphere in New York.

McIlroy said “it’s a big part of your life” and understood why Donald wanted to take the time to commit to 2027.

“It’s a big commitment. He’s putting a lot into it but he’s put his golf career on hold for six years to do this,” the Northern Irishman said.

“He needs to feel like everything that’s happening is right, and Diane [Donald’s wife] He has to be involved in this. “The kids need to be involved, and it’s more than just a decision for him to make at the end of the day.”

McIlroy said he was determined to play a key role at Adare Manor, which will play a Ryder Cup for the first time on the island of Ireland.

“At the end of the day we all see the opportunity for him to be the greatest ever Ryder Cup captain if we win in Ireland.

“I’m excited for him and the opportunity he has.

“I want to be a part of that team to help him make that history.”
