S. Janaki’s last rites held with state honours in Mysuru | LIVE

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday, July 12, 2026, said that the government will give full state award to the legendary playback singer. He would explore ways to immortalize Janaki and her legacy and describe the late singer as one of India’s greatest musical icons.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Mr Shivakumar said he would hold discussions with members of the film industry on measures to preserve his legacy. “One of India’s most iconic personalities, legendary playback singer Janaki, who was called ‘Ghana Kogile’ (Singing Nightingale) is no longer with us. She has served our film industry in all languages for nearly 50 years,” he said.
The Chief Minister said he spoke to Janaki’s family on Saturday (July 11) and offered to facilitate the transfer of her body to Chennai or Hyderabad if the family wanted.
“I asked her family, if you want to take her to Chennai, I will make the necessary arrangements. If you want to take her to Hyderabad, I will fly her there. But they said no. Our grandmother’s last wish was to stay in Mysuru. So they brought her here,” he said.
