And Manchester United’s Mateus Cunha made it three after the break on a night when Scotland huffed and puffed but ultimately fell behind.

“We’re losing bad goals at bad times against a team that can punish you with quality,” McGinn told BBC Sport. “We had a few chances but now we have to wait.

“The kids are exhausted, we fell short in terms of quality but we gave absolutely everything. The youngsters are empty at the moment. It’s just not possible [that we qualify] but we will wait and see.

“It’s a bit raw at the moment but we’re grateful for the support from the fans, we know it’s tough being there. I hope the journey doesn’t end and if we have to go again, we’ll go again.”
