Samsung shares rally after shipping industry-first HBM4E AI memory chip samples

Shares of Samsung Electronics rose as much as 6.51% after the company said it had begun shipping samples of its latest high-bandwidth memory chip to customers worldwide.

The 12-layer HBM4E chip, which Samsung describes as an industry first, can reach speeds of up to 16 Gigabits per second with “improved energy efficiency and thermal performance.”

The 12-layer HBM4E, which vertically stacks Samsung’s Dynamic Random Access Memory, has a capacity of 48 gigabytes, representing a more than 30% increase over the previous generation, the company said in a press release.

The South Korean chipmaker added that there are plans to expand the series to include 8-layer 32 GB and 16-layer 64 GB configurations, depending on customer requirements.

“Through our advanced manufacturing capabilities and preventive infrastructure investments, we will continue to support the growth of the global AI memory market,” said Sang Joon Hwang, vice president and head of memory development at Samsung Electronics.

The news comes after Samsung began shipping HBM4 chips to customers in February in a bid to narrow the gap with SK Hynix and strengthen its position in the next-generation AI memory market.

Shares were last traded at 310,500 won, up 3.67%.
