San Francisco voters continue to embrace the political center, signaling a shift in a city long defined by ultra-progressive policies.
Mayor Daniel Lurie and his moderate allies have successfully built a powerful, centrist political apparatus that resonates with residents fed up with the city’s “pandemic decline,” according to a recent report from Politico.
“A key part of Lurie’s effort to advance his political and policy agenda is Believe in SF, a nonprofit advocacy group that has quietly established itself as one of the wealthiest forces in San Francisco. The PAC, one of several organizations that make up the group’s operation, just raised nearly $1.8 million to support Lurie’s preferred candidates and ballot measures in the city’s June primary.” Politico reported Mondayhe calls it a “political machine.”

“The results were decisive: Two of Lurie’s moderate allies on the board, Alan Wong and Stephen Sherrill, won competitive races by wide margins. And voters overwhelmingly rejected a union-led ballot measure — which Lurie fervently opposed — that would have increased taxes on large corporations with ‘overpaid CEOs.'”
At the heart of this shift is the massive influx of moderate campaign spending aimed at removing progressives from power. Groups like Neighbors for a Better San Francisco, a business- and tech-backed advocacy organization, have poured millions of dollars into local contests to keep the city on a centrist course.

The mid-major streak solidified Lurie’s grip on local government. Latest polling data from the San Francisco Chronicle reveals that he has a 74% approval rating, driven by voters’ optimism about downtown revitalization and cleaner neighborhoods.
Lurie, a moderate Democrat and heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, was elected in 2024 after soundly defeating incumbent London Breed. His victory ended a multi-year voter revolt against permissive policies on crime, retail theft, drug markets and homelessness that critics argue have caused a serious quality of life crisis. The political transformation even caught the attention of President Donald Trump, who praised the city’s efforts to change its course.
For the city’s left wing, the political consequences were decisive. In recent executive elections, moderate candidates successfully flipped key seats, notching lopsided victories over progressive incumbents.

“It’s a winning streak that demonstrates Lurie’s current dominance of San Francisco politics, as he has a very high approval rating of 74 percent and also has the city’s push toward the political center in recent years,” Politico reported.
