Sanderson backs Cook to lead Labor to next election

“This goes beyond the current election cycle. This is about completely changing the way our economy works and creating the jobs, health and housing we need to move this forward.”
Cook and Sanderson were facing the media to announce the state’s new plan for domestic green steel to be used in major government projects.
“My government will seek suppliers to provide local green steel for major government projects, including the hospital developments we have recently announced,” Cook said.
“Locally produced green steel is an important part of my vision to be a renewable energy powerhouse and do more here.”
The plan to use local green steel has two parts, Sanderson said.
“So there’s the green iron industry, and then there’s the green steel recycling industry,” he said.
“We have a huge amount of steel infrastructure, oil and gas infrastructure that has been decommissioned and can be converted into new steel products that can be used.
“The second part is the green iron sector, which is a precursor to the wider green steel industry. We are the world’s largest exporter of iron, so we produce and supply large amounts of iron ore to decarbonise the steel supply chain. We need to provide the opportunity to process this ore onshore, and do this with the abundant renewable energy we have in Western Australia.”
