Indian student found dead in US, days after going missing

Saketh Sreenivasaiah, a 22-year-old Karnataka student who went missing from San Francisco six days ago, has been found dead.

Confirming the development, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco wrote that Saketh’s body was found in X and that the family was guaranteed assistance in returning his body to India. “The Consulate is deeply saddened to inform you that local police have confirmed that the body of missing Indian student Saketh Sreenivasaiah has been found. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”

While the Consulate General did not disclose the cause of death, it said, “Our consular officials are in direct contact with the family and will support them with all necessary formalities and services.”

However, Saketh’s friend, who wished to remain anonymous, wrote on LinkedIn that Saketh was found dead in Lake Anza near Berkeley Hills. Saketh was a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley and had been pursuing his Masters (Product Development Program) since August 2025. According to local media reports, Saketh disappeared on Tuesday, February 10. The backpack containing his passport and laptop was found on a doorstep in the Park Hills neighborhood. He was described as being approximately 6 feet tall, weighing approximately 180 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes.

Saketh’s friend wrote on LinkedIn that there were no symptoms until the last two weeks, when Saketh began eating less and showing less interest, surviving mostly on chips and cookies.

Saketh completed his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. According to his LinkedIn profile, he holds a patent for inventing a “microchannel cooling system for hyperloop.” He graduated in 2025 and moved to California a few months later.
