As a result of the collision of two cars, a 5-year-old girl died and a 5-year-old boy was seriously injured.

The death follows a fatal collision between two vehicles on the A59 in Gisburn, Lancashire, at around 3.55pm last Thursday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after a westbound Skoda Karoq crashed into a Volkswagen Golf R near the former council yard between the junctions of Crow Park Lane and Strawberry Fields.

The Skoda’s female driver, in her 60s, and two passengers, a boy and a girl, both aged five, were seriously injured.

Today Lancashire Police confirmed the five-year-old girl died in hospital from her injuries on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of the Volkswagen Golf, aged in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital. He is reportedly being treated as a witness.

Sergeant Laura Kendal said: ‘It is heartbreaking news that the little girl has passed away and my thoughts are primarily with her family and loved ones.

The A59 in Lancashire is where the crash occurred at around 3.55pm last Thursday

‘I also continue to think about the three men who are being treated in hospital for injuries sustained in this horrific collision.

‘I must emphasize that the investigation into the collision is ongoing and it is still at an early stage to establish exactly what happened.

‘We continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed this incident or has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident (who has not yet contacted us) to contact us.’

Sergeant Kendal added: ‘If you have information that you think could help us we would like you to contact us.

‘We ask that you please refrain from speculating about what is happening. ‘The investigation will determine this and any speculative comments about what might have happened could be very distressing for the little girl’s family.’
