Sarah Ferguson could be stripped of Freedom of York honour in a matter of days amid Jeffrey Epstein links
Sarah Ferguson’s Freedom of the City of York could be canceled following an upcoming council debate.
She received this honor as a wedding gift from York in 1987, a year after she married Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in 1986.
The City of York has scheduled a meeting on March 26 to discuss removing this clause.
Councilors remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s freedom in 2022; This was the first time he had been robbed of such an honour.
The sole motion at next week’s extraordinary council meeting reads: “The council has resolved that, in accordance with Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the City of York Council shall revoke the status of Honorary Freeman of the City granted to Sarah Ferguson in 1987.”
Residents, interested parties and councilors were invited to join the debate at the Guildhall in York.
This comes after six companies linked to the former duchess began shutting down following the publication of the Epstein files, according to Companies House documents.
It was stated that an application was made for the dismissal of each company after new revelations regarding its connection with the late pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein emerged.
Among the latest documents released were correspondence in which Epstein asked Ferguson to issue a statement saying he was “not a paedo.”
He also asked her to tell a newspaper that she had been “deceived” into believing false claims about him after he told her he “never wanted anything to do with Jeffrey Epstein again.”
Ferguson also sought financial advice from Epstein while in prison and begged him for a job after his release.
Sarah’s Trust, the charity she founded, has also announced it will close “for the foreseeable future”.
The council has previously said the honorary freedom of the city was awarded in recognition of notable services to local people, distinguished individuals and the royal family.
Other recipients of the honor include the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill, film composer John Barry and actress Dame Judi Dench.
