Sarah Ferguson’s surprising role when Meghan Markle first joined Firm | Royal | News

According to Prince Harry, his aunt Sarah Ferguson offered to give Meghan Markle a helping hand during a major royal milestone before she joined the family. The Duke of Sussex revealed all about the historic moment in his bombshell 2023 memoir, Spare.

Harry was married to his then-girlfriend’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. He detailed the moment he prepared to meet Elizabeth for the first time at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, and revealed that it was Sarah who stepped in to give him advice.

He wrote: “Fergie came out looking a bit emotional and said, ‘Can you curtsy?’ he asked. Meg nodded. “Fergie then performed and Meg imitated her.”

While the moment turned out to be hugely important for the couple, who will soon marry at St George’s Chapel in 2018, royal fans were left confused when Sarah was asked about the couple in 2023.

In an interview with Telegram, Fergie said: “I don’t really know Meghan. I haven’t really met her. I spoke to her at the funeral and I thought she looked absolutely beautiful. I think she’s beautiful.”

“She’s made Harry so happy and that’s lovely. Honestly, Harry is so happy with her. He really loves her. And I think that’s lovely and Diana would be so proud of him and his lovely grandchildren.”

Other details of Meghan’s first meeting with Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Lodge were recalled by Harry in his memoirs; including the moment the future Duchess mistook Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor for a member of staff.

Harry wrote: “My uncle Andrew, who was sitting next to her and holding her bag, began to escort her out. After a while Meg asked me something about the Queen’s assistant. I asked her who she was talking about.”

“The man who walked her to the door,” Meghan replied. Harry goes on to describe how he mistook the Queen’s second son for one of the monarch’s lackeys, adding: “He certainly didn’t Google us.”
