Savannah Guthrie to host ‘Wordle’ game show for NBC

NBC announced Monday that “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie will host a “Wordle” game show for the first time, with the announcement coinciding with the 100th day of her mother’s disappearance.

“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon, who will executive produce the game show, appeared on the “Today” show with Guthrie to promote the new show.

“We’ve been developing ‘Wordle’ as a game show with The New York Times for the last two and a half years, and now it’s official, we’re producing the ‘Wordle’ game show with host Savannah Guthrie!” Fallon told the audience.

“We’ve kept this secret between us for a long time,” Guthrie said.

“Wordle” is a hugely popular puzzle game that first went viral in 2021 and was later acquired by The New York Times.

Guthrie explained that “Wordle” was picked up by NBC in February and was scheduled to shoot in March, but the network’s plans were disrupted when his 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, tragically disappeared from her home in Tuscon, Arizona. He thanked the network, Fallon, The Times and Universal for pausing production.

“When everything happened to me and my family, they stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you,'” said Savannah. “And as you know, Hollywood is a really tough business and I wasn’t expecting this. I just want to say thank you. It means so much to me.”

“We can’t do this without you,” Fallon responded. “We need you, man. You’re so good and so much fun. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’s great.”

Shooting is expected to take place in the summer. The release date has not been announced yet.

After a two-month hiatus, Guthrie returned to “Today” in early April after the search for his mother gained national attention.

It is believed that Nancy Guthrie was taken from her home against her will on the morning of February 1st and was last seen when her son-in-law dropped her off at her home around 10pm the night before.
