Google was investigated by CCI in 2020 to promote unfair billing applications in the game store services and your own payment application, Google Pay.
In 2022, CCI concluded that Google’s exemption, such as Youtube, required the use of the Google Play billing system (GPBS). The regulator fined the company 936,44 Crore.
While the Court of Company Appeals maintained many of the CCI’s findings, in a decision given in March this year, it reduced the sentence to 216.69 Crore.
In May, the court re -introduced two of CCI’s instructions and forbade Google to be transparent about billing data policies and to use such data to obtain a competitive advantage.
