SC agrees to hear plea of 6 MLAs of Sena (UBT) against merger with Shinde

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a plea challenging Shiv Sena’s (UBT) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s approval of the merger of six MPs with the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. A bench comprising Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe issued a notice on the plea and sought responses from the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office and other respondents.

The court said, “Publish a notice” and sent the matter to the hearing two weeks later.

Ahead of the monsoon session, the Speaker approved the merger of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena on July 18.

Official sources had said that the strength of Shiv Sena increased to 13 with the merger of six MPs.

A total of nine MPs were elected on Shiv Sena (UBT) tickets, of which six joined the Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

Shiv Sena (UBT) had argued before the Speaker that the rebel MPs should be disqualified as their defection falls under the anti-defection law.
