The Supreme Court on Monday, November 3, 2025, rejected Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind’s plea seeking a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government to pay compensation to victims of mob lynchings.

A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi refused to interfere with the Allahabad High Court order asking the petitioner to approach the state government.

The plea filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and others had sought comprehensive directions regarding implementation of the apex court’s directions in the Tehseen Poonawalla case.

The plea emphasized the allegation that the State government had failed to implement preventive, compensatory and punitive measures prescribed by the top court in this judgment.

The apex court, on July 15, while disposing of a PIL filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind seeking compliance with the apex court’s guidelines to control mob lynching incidents, observed that every incident of mob lynching/mob violence is a separate incident and cannot be pursued in a case of public interest.

However, the Supreme Court noted that the affected parties are at liberty to first approach the appropriate government authority for implementation of the apex court’s directions.
