Alabama Democrats pick Senate nominee in race to succeed Tuberville

Former Judge Everett Wess won the Democratic Senate nomination in deep-red Alabama in the race to replace Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor this year.
Wess defeated small business owner Dakarai Larriett in the Democratic Senate runoff, the Associated Press reported Tuesday night.
Wess and Larriett finished first and second in a field of four candidates in last month’s primary election. But since no one received 50% of the vote, Wess and Larriett entered Tuesday’s runoff election.

Wess will be seen as the clear underdog to the Republican nominee in the general election. Rep. Barry Moore, who is backed by President Donald Trump, defeated former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson in the GOP nomination runoff on Tuesday.
With the exception of former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones’ special election victory in 2017, it has been more than three decades since a Democrat has won a Senate election in Alabama.

Tuberville, a former Auburn University head football coach, is running for governor this year rather than seek re-election to the Senate.
