Schools to remain closed in THESE states today due to…; Check state-wise list here

Severe cold wave and dense fog have forced many Indian states to extend winter holidays. While Delhi schools remain closed till January 15, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and other states have announced closures or revised timings to ensure the safety of students during harsh weather conditions.

There are no officially declared school holidays nationwide on Friday, January 9, 2026. However, severe winter conditions in northern and eastern India have led many state governments to extend winter holidays or modify school operations. Persistent cold waves and dense fog significantly affected daily life, prompting authorities to prioritize student safety.

Cold Weather Disrupts School Operations in Regions

During the peak of winter, temperatures drop in the northern states and visibility decreases due to fog. These conditions disrupted transportation and routine activities, including school activities. In response, state governments have either extended winter holidays or announced temporary closures, especially for younger students in government and aided schools.

Delhi Schools Closed Till January 15

The Delhi government has officially extended winter holidays for all schools until January 15, 2026. This decision applies to government schools, government-aided schools and private schools in the National Capital Region. The Directorate of Education (DoE) confirmed that the extension is in line with the academic calendar and was announced considering the extremely cold conditions.

Uttar Pradesh: District-Based Decisions Implemented

School closures in Uttar Pradesh vary by region. In Varanasi, the District Basic Education Officer has ordered the closure of schools from pre-primary to Class 8 from January 7 to January 9. This directive applies to institutions affiliated to CBSE, ICSE and state boards. Students are exempt from attending classes, while teachers and staff are required to report to schools to manage administrative work.

Meanwhile, schools up to Class 8 remain closed in cities such as Lucknow and Kanpur. However, depending on updated weather forecasts, there is a possibility that schools in Lucknow may reopen soon. Parents and students are advised to follow official announcements closely.

Punjab Extended Winter Holiday Until January 13

The Punjab government has also extended winter holidays for all schools until January 13, 2026. Schools were initially planned to reopen after January 7, but worsening weather conditions forced authorities to extend the closure. Dense fog and extreme cold continue to disrupt normal life across the state.

Other States on Alert

States like Jharkhand, Tripura and Telangana are also reviewing weather conditions and may announce closures or revised school timings if necessary. Students and parents are encouraged to stay up to date through official government notifications.

Overall, although January 9 is not a declared nationwide holiday, weather-related extensions have effectively left many schools closed in many states.
