Science ‘was not being taught’ in some Baltimore County schools, official says

A regional official told the school administrator on Wednesday, some Baltimore district of primary schools, science was neglected, he said.
“Unfortunately, science was not taught in some regions. Some of our most vulnerable population were not taught, R said Racquel Jones, chief of schools.
The region found the subject gap when visiting the best performance schools and teachers after 2023-2024 science MCAP Points released. Jones said that the region saw advanced science scores with reforms after this discovery.
Maryland Integrated Science Evaluation (MISA) is a comprehensive assessment program or a component of MCAP. MISA is managed to fifth and eighth grade students and high school life sciences students.
In 2025, 23.5% of the fifth grade students of the Baltimore district tested in science evaluations; 26.6% of eighth grade students and 31.8% of high school students met the same comparison. “Yetkin” means that the student encounters a score standard determined by the State Education Department.
The fifth grade students throughout the state of 2023 scored better than the next two years. Now, more than one quarter of these students have been measured in 2023 at 34.5%. The eighth grade fell in 2024, but now 31.4% competent is about five percent higher than in 2023. At high school level, approximately 50% of students were 10% higher than last year.
“I was a little uncomfortable with your interpretation that science is not taught. How does this happen? How are we not taught science in schools?” Board Member Christina Pumphrey.
“I think I think there are opponents, Jones Jones said. “And there’s a lot we’re trying to catch in the academic day.”
In some schools, English language art education may be given priority to science. Now, Jones said the region is sure that science has returned to the forefront from where it could be the “back seat”.
Orum I don’t think it was deliberately done, ”he said.
