Scientist makes first-of-its-kind discovery on remote mountain range: ‘It was incredible’

Yes more than 20,000 There are species of bees around the world, and after a study of pollinators in one of Australia’s most remote areas, another one has been added to the list.
Australian Broadcasting Corporation A new species of “horned” bee has been discovered in the Bremer Range in Western Australia. The area is located approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) east of Perth, one of the most remote cities in the world.
Local bee scientist Dr. Kit Prendergast was amazed by the biodiversity of the area, saying: “I’ve never seen so many insects – not just native bees, but wasps and flies. It was incredible.”
The highlight of the trip was examining the critically endangered native flower Marianthus aquilonaris, native to the Bremer Mountain Range. Prendergast noticed that a distinctive-looking pollinator was taking care of it. Its head was adorned with what looked like a pair of horns. This never-before-seen bee was named the Lucifer bee after the Netflix show.
It is not yet clear what function the “horns” perform, but they are present only in females. They are lonely bees. Bees are thought to be social creatures that live in large colonies, but this is actually not the case for the vast majority of bee species.
About 90% Most of the bee species in the world are solitary, and females do all the work, from pollination to raising offspring. In other words, any female bee that lives alone, like most working mothers, can be considered queens.
Few people live in the region, but it is known for its mining activities, which, although lucrative, cause great ecological destruction. While more projects are in the works, the discovery of the Lucifer bee raises important questions about the environmental impact of clearing land for mining. It is also a reminder of the wonderful secrets that are still untouched in nature.
Economic development need not come at the expense of biodiversity, but this is often the case. For this reason to have knowledge and be busy productive conversations It is crucial to help spread the word to protect the silent victims of unsustainable growth.
