Scientists suggested that parents should potty train their children earlier because diapers are harmful to the environment.
Approximately 300,000 diapers are thrown away every minute worldwide, and experts are worried that this waste is starting to pile up.
Absorbent hygiene products (AHPs), which include diapers, incontinence products and menstrual products, now create 160 to 200 million tonnes of waste each year.
More than 99 percent of them are thrown into landfills or burned, contributing to plastic pollution, water and air contamination, and the spread of diseases.
Meanwhile, the average age of toilet training in the UK has risen from two years and four months in the 1950s to just over three years in the 2000s.
That’s a 32 percent increase in just fifty years, resulting in millions more diapers entering our environment.
Lead author Dr Elze Porte, from University College London, told the Daily Mail: ‘If children had been toilet trained earlier, the number of nappies used and discarded could have been greatly reduced.
‘Using fewer nappies is better for the environment, it also saves families money and can help children’s bladder and bowel health.’

The biggest problem with diapers and other AHPs is that they are extremely difficult to recycle, making them one of the main sources of plastic waste worldwide.
Modern diapers are a complex mix of fibers, plastics and superabsorbent materials that are almost always contaminated with human waste and medical products.
While some recycling technologies exist designed to process these products, even the most efficient recover only a small fraction of the original materials.
In countries with adequate waste collection services, the remaining waste is often disposed of in landfills or destroyed in incinerators.
But in many low-income countries, diapers and other hygiene products are thrown onto the streets or burned; This creates a serious pollution risk.
Dr Porte says: ‘This makes absorbent hygiene products a significant but largely unrecognized contributing factor to the plastic waste crisis.’
In articles published in the journal Nature SustainabilityResearchers suggest that one of the simplest ways to deal with this growing problem is to immediately reduce the number of diapers used by toilet-trained children.
However, recent research shows that parents give their children toilet training later and later.

A research team in the US found that only 40 to 60 percent of children completed toilet training in 36 months.
Similarly, a 2024 survey of teachers in England and Wales found that one in four new school starters were not toilet trained.
They acknowledged that this would create ‘challenges’ for parents due to ‘lack of guidance, time pressures on carers and the perceived convenience of disposable products’.
But it’s not just diapers that cause mountains of waste; They are all absorbent hygiene products used by millions of people every day.
‘Approximately 14 million people in the UK alone suffer from incontinence, and many of them use disposable incontinence products,’ says Dr Porte.
‘This problem is getting worse with a growing and aging population; So it’s important that we take action now to reduce waste and find more sustainable solutions to inevitable waste.’
Since these people cannot avoid needing these products, the researchers also argue that industry should take action and make it easier to recycle AHPs and develop fully compostable alternatives.
Dr Porte adds: ‘Our research shows that this is not a problem with a single solution. It requires coordinated changes across behaviour, technology, materials and policy.’
