An anti-immigration protest outside the Scottish Parliament triggered a counter protest as police attempted to separate groups carrying out verbal jabs. ‘Unite the Clans of Scotland’ held the event at Holyrood, calling on “patriots” to gather from across the country. On the opposite side of the police barriers stood anti-racist organizations and other left-wing protesters.
Those from the Unite the Clans demonstration waved Saltire and Union flags and chanted “send them home” as they engaged in heated arguments with the opposing group. Anti-racism protesters chanted “Nazi scum” at rally attendees, while also playing music and holding banners. According to reports, dozens of people gathered for an anti-immigration demonstration on the parliament grounds at noon, and a larger group of counter-protesters also arrived at the building. There was a significant police presence, with barriers placed to keep the two groups separate.
Tammy McGregor, from Perth, said she attended the Unite the Clans rally “because of the number of women, the number of people in general being attacked and not feeling safe.”
He said: “We are called racists, we are called Nazis, we are called bigots.
“This has nothing to do with someone’s race, it has nothing to do with where they come from…
“We don’t have the resources, it’s that simple, and there’s a high level of crime.”
Unite the Clans Scotland, which has also organized other anti-immigration protests, had previously called on its supporters for “meaningful change”. In a post on social media, the group stated: “Whether motivated by economic concerns, national identity, or the future direction of the country, those participating share a common goal: Demanding answers to failed policies and pressing for meaningful change.”

Among the counter-demonstrators was Karen Paton, who is part of anti-racism group Falkirk for All.
Ms Paton said many of those under the Unite the Clans banner had been brought together in demonstrations outside hotels housing asylum seekers.
He said: “Unite the Clans are scapegoating the wrong people…
“We need to look at the real problems in this country – the lack of affordable housing, the lack of NHS, the lack of dental appointments.
“They blame the refugees for all this; these are government problems.”

Ms Paton said rallygoers were listening to “far-right politics” and were “stuck in a movement they don’t really understand”.
Stand Up to Racism Scotland has previously stated that “recent toxic hotel protests have involved far-right groups”.
The group said: “They fuel fear, racism and Islamophobia every day, injecting poison into our societies.
“They are not ‘concerned citizens.’
“They are extremists with a dangerous agenda who hope to mislead the local population.”
