Sen. Jim Justice sued for $5.1 million in unpaid federal taxes

The US government filed a lawsuit on Monday Senator Jim Justicepaid a West Virginia Republican and his wife a $5.1 million settlement of unpaid federal income taxes, penalties and interest from the 2009 tax filing year.

“Despite a request for notice and payment of assessments…James C. Justice, II and Cathy L. Justice neglected or refused to make full payment of these assessments to the United States.” Beckley, the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in West Virginia alleges.D..

In the case filed by the Tax Office of the Ministry of Justice, the judge is asked to rule in favor of the United States for the amount of $5,164,739.75, which is the amount owed to the couple. Internal Revenue Service as of Aug. 4, according to the filing.

Justice was elected to the Senate in November 2024, replacing independent Sen. Joe Manchin, who left the Democratic party earlier that year.

The coal mining heir previously served as governor of West Virginia from 2017 until he entered the Senate in January.

CNBC requested comment on the tax case from the Senate Judiciary’s office and the lawyers representing him.
