Sen. Thom Tillis said Sunday that he is willing to end the blockade of Federal Reserve presidential candidate Kevin Warsh after the U.S. Justice Department dropped its investigation of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.
“I’m ready to move forward with Mr. Warsh’s approval, I think he’ll be a great Fed chairman,” Tillis said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “We’ve been very clear that we’ve had assurances from the DOJ that I need to make sure they’re not using the DOJ as a weapon to threaten the Fed’s independence. So that will allow Mr. Warsh to proceed with his confirmation in a timely manner.”
Tillis had promised before the Senate Banking Committee that he would not vote for Warsh, whom he supported, until the Justice Department dropped its investigation into Powell. The Justice Department was investigating Powell over alleged cost overruns related to renovations at the Federal Reserve building.
