Senate rejects Democrats’ Iran war powers resolution after Republicans flip

An explosive Senate hearing turned into a victory for President Donald Trump and his administration; leading Republicans have made another bid to handcuff the administration’s officials in Iran.
In its final action before leaving Washington, D.C. for more than two weeks, the Senate rejected an attempt by Democrats to rein in Trump’s war powers in Iran as talks continue to create a long-term peace deal between Iran and the United States.
It was the same war powers decision by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., a month ago that stunned Republicans in the upper chamber.

What appeared to be a foregone conclusion just hours after Trump and Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., sparred over the Iran war and the administration’s lack of candor with lawmakers turned into a surprise late-night victory in a closed-door meeting to discuss the president’s landmark voter ID and citizenship verification legislation.
Trump argued to the GOP that the previous war powers decision, passed Tuesday thanks in part to the absence of a pair of Republicans, hurt the administration’s negotiating position with the Iranians.

Meetings at the White House with key opponents helped change their minds and gave the administration a leg up as it worked to reach an agreement with Iran beyond the 60-day memorandum of understanding.
